Dedicated IP FAQs
Learn how Dedicated IPs, IP pools, domains, and subaccounts work together in Netcore Email API.
1. Dedicated IP Overview
What is a Dedicated IP?
A Dedicated IP is an IP address reserved exclusively for your account. It allows you to build and maintain an independent sender reputation with ISPs, improving deliverability and inbox placement.
Do I need DNS configuration to use a Dedicated IP?
Yes. Netcore strongly recommends configuring a custom envelope (return-path) for your domain from the Email API dashboard. This is essential for proper reputation tracking and deliverability.
2. Sending Emails Using Dedicated IPs
How do I send an email using a Dedicated IP?
Pass the pool name containing your Dedicated IP as the value of the ippool parameter in your API request or as the ippool header in SMTP.
How can I send emails through the default IP of my account?
To force delivery through the account’s default IP, pass:
ippool = default
This bypasses domain-level and pool-based selection.
3. IP Selection & Delivery Hierarchy
How does Netcore choose the IP for email delivery?
Netcore selects the delivery IP using the following hierarchy (highest to lowest priority):
ippoolvalue passed in the API or SMTP call- IP assigned to the sending domain
- Default IP of the account
- Netcore shared IP pool (fallback)
What happens when I click “Set As Default” for an IP?
The selected IP becomes the account-level default IP.
All emails use this IP unless a different IP is specified via ippool or assigned at the domain level.
What happens if there is no default IP?
If no default IP exists and no IP is assigned to the domain, emails are delivered through Netcore’s shared IP infrastructure, unless overridden.
4. Using Netcore Shared IPs
How do I send emails through Netcore’s shared IPs?
-
If no default or domain IP exists, simply do not pass the
ippoolparameter. -
If a default or domain IP exists, explicitly pass:
ippool = shared
5. IP Warm-Up
Why is IP warm-up required?
A new Dedicated IP has no sending history. Sudden high-volume traffic from a new IP is often flagged as suspicious by ISPs, impacting delivery and inbox placement.
Gradual warm-up helps establish a positive reputation.
How do I warm up a Dedicated IP?
After purchasing a Dedicated IP, Netcore provides a customized warm-up plan. A typical schedule looks like this:
| Day | Emails |
|---|---|
| 1 | 500 |
| 2 | 1,000 |
| 3 | 2,000 |
| 4 | 4,000 |
| 5 | 6,000 |
| 6 | 8,000 |
| 7 | 10,000 |
| 8 | 15,000 |
| 9 | 20,000 |
| 10 | 50,000 |
| 11 | 70,000 |
| 12 | 100,000 |
Increase volume only if engagement and bounce rates remain healthy.
6. IP Pools: Concepts & Rules
What is a pool name?
A pool is a logical grouping of one or more IPs. Passing a pool name using ippool tells Netcore to select an IP from that pool for delivery.
Pools are commonly used to:
- Separate transactional and promotional traffic
- Manage warm-up IPs
- Scale traffic across multiple IPs
What is pool0 and why can’t I modify it?
pool0 and why can’t I modify it?pool0 is a system-managed default pool. It cannot be edited or deleted because it ensures platform stability and fallback behavior.
7. Creating and Managing IP Pools
How do I create a new pool and assign an IP?
From the Email API dashboard:
- Create a new pool
- Assign one or more available IPs
- Use the pool name in API or SMTP calls
Which IP is used when a pool has multiple IPs?
If a pool contains multiple IPs, Netcore selects one using internal load distribution and availability logic optimized for delivery.
How can I remove an IP from a pool?
You can remove an IP if:
- The pool is not system-managed
- The IP is not required by a domain or subaccount
How do I delete a pool?
A pool can be deleted only if:
- It contains no IPs
- It is not actively referenced
8. Domain-Level IP Assignment
Why should I assign an IP to a domain?
Assigning an IP to a domain ensures:
- Consistent sender identity
- Stable reputation per domain
- Predictable IP usage without passing
ippool
How do I assign or unassign an IP to a domain?
From the dashboard, you can:
- Assign one or more IPs to a domain
- View assigned IPs
- Unassign IPs when no longer needed
Domain-level IPs override account defaults unless ippool is passed.
9. Subaccount IP Management
How do I assign an IP to a subaccount?
From the parent account:
- Select the subaccount
- Assign one or more IPs
- Optionally set a default IP
How can I check or remove IPs from a subaccount?
You can view and unassign IPs from the subaccount configuration panel, provided the IP is not set as default or required by an assigned domain.
How do I set a default IP for a subaccount?
Select one of the assigned IPs and mark it as the default IP.
This IP is used unless overridden by domain-level assignment or ippool.
10. Domain and Subaccount Interaction
If a domain with an assigned IP is mapped to a subaccount, does the IP assignment continue?
Yes. Domain-level IP assignments persist even after the domain is assigned to a subaccount, ensuring consistent sender reputation.
11. Key Takeaways
ippoolhas the highest priority in IP selection- Domain-level IPs ensure consistency and reputation control
- Pools simplify IP management and scaling
- Shared IPs act as a fallback or explicit choice
